Difference Between Quartz & Quartzite Countertops

Quartz and quartzite can make for very stunning countertops.  Although both materials can be compared to granite and marble in terms of beauty, they’re considered to be much stronger than those materials. Quartz tiles are much easier to maintain. While both materials have many similarities between them, the biggest difference lies in their composition. If you’re currently in the market for new countertops, this short guide will help you decide between quartz and quartzite countertops.

Quartz

Quartz has a similar appearance to granite and is considered to be one of the hardest natural materials on earth. It is mostly comprised of silicon dioxide and is scratch and stain resistant. It is also non porous to bacteria, so you can be sure that it won’t easily breed mold and mildew. The crystalline mineral variety is most popularly used in bathroom and kitchen counters.

Most quartz counters are made from natural slab that have been polished. Although pure natural slabs have become more uncommon these days due to the high costs, the engineered variety can rival in quality. Ground quartz is combined with binders, resins and pigments before being poured into moulds and shaped into the desired size or design. The mixture is then allowed to harden.

Quartzite

Quartzite on the other hand is hard metamorphic rock that was derived from sandstone. When sandstone is heated and pressure is added, it is morphed into quartzite. While the sandstone is transforming into quartzite, streaks and patterns may appear, giving the surface some very interesting markings. Sometimes, you might even find small deposits of iron, clay mix or even carbon in the sandstone, which is responsible for the different colours.

Benefits

Both quartz and quartzite counters are guaranteed to be durable and resistant to scratches. Quartzite is known to be slightly harder though so if you’re looking for a sturdy countertop material, this is your best bet. The great thing about these countertops is that you can cut food directly on the surface without fear of damaging or scratching them. They’re also stain resistant so you don’t have to worry about discolorations.

Care and maintenance

Unlike other countertops that are made from natural stones like granite, quartz and quartzite countertops need not be sealed every year. The shine polish will only dull the natural sheen over time. If you want to clean the surface, all you have to do is wipe it clean with a wet cloth. You can also spray the surface with a mild disinfectant.

To ensure that you’re getting the best quality quartz and quartzite countertops, it’s important to do your research first and look for countertops that will suit your needs the most. Have a contractor install the countertops for you because it’s always better to have a professional on the job.
