 Petrified Wood is essentially ancient plant material , buried by sediment , and preserved from decay due to a lack of oxygen and organisms . Groundwater that was rich in dissolved solids , then flowed through the sediment , and replaced the original plant material with silica, calcite, pyrite and other inorganic material, like opal, thus forming Petrified Wood.
