Why not transform your tired looking garden or patio with a beautiful array of natural tones / colours that you'll find within our natural sandstone paving.
Our impressive wide range of garden paving , in many different sizes / formats , offers the rustic beauty and traditional charm and appearance that only Indian paving can offer , including but not limited too , beautiful depth of variation in colour / tone throughout ,with every single paver offering its own uniqueness , where it has been crafted by natures own fair hand over the course of thousands of years, guaranteeing your garden or patio installation , a finish that only the beauty of nature could attain .
Sandstone paving offers a choice of a naturally riven ( undulating ) surface or a smooth, Honed ( polished to a matt finish) & Sawn option that will result in a more contemporary finish for what is a very traditional , reliable and long serving material in the UK market .
The difference between Riven or Honed & Sawn Sandstone paving
A riven surface is a naturally occurring feature when the stone is neatly split along its layers, providing a 100 % natural and authentic finish.
This engineering process leaves natural , undulating , variations on the surface of each slab, meaning that no paver is exactly the same, some slabs will be heavily riven , yet others may be suffer no riven effect whatsoever , as they are as nature intended , to give a distinctive look that only riven Sandstone can provide in the natural stone world .
Each and every riven sandstone slab features hand-cut ( hand-dressed ) edges which add to the natural look of sandstone paving , to create a naturally beautiful and traditional feature in your garden or wherever the installation may be .
As previously alluded too , this style of Indian Sandstone paving tends to be more suited to more traditional settings / dwellings such period buildings , cottages , farmhouses etc and is a great alternative to Yorkstone , which is notoriously dearer in comparison to the likes of Indian Sandstone .
Sawn sandstone slabs are machine cut down to size , and the surface of the material is honed ( polished down) or sandblasted, that will leave a perfectly smooth finish with , on occasions , a very slight sheen . The front , back and sides of the slabs are all honed to give the same finish all over the slab to offer the ultimate in contemporary appearance , a totally different look to the more traditional , so much so that you would not believe they are from the very same stone .
When sandstone is Honed & Sawn it transforms in to an entirely different beast to riven sandstone , and will offer almost a "marblesque" appearance , with sometimes really quite diverse patterns .
Sandstone Paving Colours
Sandstone paving , by nature , offers huge diversity in colour / tone from one variety to another , and also from a honed & sawn finish to a riven surface .
We offer a wide variety of sandstones from the relatively neutral colours of Mint Fossil , to more earthy tones of Autumn Brown & Raj Green , and then almost a mix of neutral / earthy tones in the Surrey Buff , you then also have the variety of consistently grey tones , that is offered by the Kandla Grey , this can vary from a paler grey , to a more " greeny " grey to a darker tone altogether, which offers-up a beautiful balance of tones finish when installed .
A Robust & Long-lasting Option
Indian Sandstone paving , by its very nature , is a very hard wearing material that will be down for as long as you want it do be , decades in fact , and tends to weather naturally over the years that is subjected to our climate .
All of our paving products are specifically designed for external use , and riven surface textures will help to offer extra grip underfoot , which some customers - who are concerned with a slip risk in wet or icy conditions , tend to favour .
Sealing Sandstone Paving
When natural stone is sealed , it offers protection against staining and absorption of water etc , which many customers prefer as it helps maintain the material over a period of time , some customers however often do not seal the riven stone and just let it weather naturally , we would certainly recommend sealing the Honed & Sawn material however , as it is notoriously easy to stain and will stick out like a sore thumb on that particular material .
Some customers will sometimes have a preference for a certain type of finish on the stone , some want a "wet look / high gloss " , others a "satin " finish while some prefer a "natural" or matt finish whilst enhancing the colour / tone of the stone , so always ensure you are purchasing a sealant that leaves the desired effect .
Sealing is ordinarily undertaken before the stone is pointed / grouted , this prevents the pointing / grout from staining the tile/slab on installation of the material , and depending on what sealant is used , it will ordinarily offer between 2 - 7 years protection , some sealants will require just the one coat , others may require two coats to fully protect the stone .
Sealant is often applied with a brush or sponge roller , dependent on the material , and is usually quite a straight forward process to follow , certain guidelines - such as sealing in dry weather , and ensuring the slabs / tiles are clean when the sealer is applied , are required , but all sealants will all offer a full run down of what is required when it is being applied to the surface of the material.
What is Calibrated Sandstone Paving?
Calibrated is a term used to advertise the stone as being of a reasonably consistent size and depth , which will invariably lead to a more straight forward installation , but even with Calibrated material , whether it is for internal or external use , Calibrated stone will have a tolerance of several mm , sometimes up to +/- 5mm on occasions , and the only way to avoid such tolerances would be to purchase rectified stone .
